Toast is a great POS. Their built-in training module? Fine for onboarding someone on the POS itself. Useless for actually teaching your staff the menu. What Toast Training Actually Covers

Toast's training tools, insofar as they exist, cover POS operation — how to ring in an order, how to split a check, how to process a tip adjustment. Which is fine, because that's what a POS company should teach. What it doesn't cover is menu knowledge — what's in the risotto, which dishes are gluten-free, what pairs with the lamb. Those are the questions your guests actually ask.

Why We're POS-Agnostic

I designed ShiftTrained to work with any POS, not just Toast. Here's why: every restaurant I've consulted for either uses a different POS than the one next door, or is mid-switch from their old system to something new. Locking training tools into a specific POS integration means either (a) you wait until the POS vendor ships it, or (b) you can't use the training tool when you switch POS providers.

ShiftTrained works from your menu PDF. Upload it — whether it's exported from Toast, Square, Clover, Lightspeed, or typed up by hand — and the AI generates training content. No integration needed to start. When the Toast integration ships (it's on the roadmap), it'll be a convenience, not a requirement.

AI vs Basic LMS

Most restaurant LMS products (Toast's built-in included) are glorified content management systems. You write the questions, record the videos, upload the PDFs, and send it to staff. The tool is a container — the content is all on you. For a 100-item menu that changes seasonally, that's weeks of work per update.
