Restaurant Staff Quiz App, Built for the Floor, Not the Conference Room
By Terry Psaltakis, Founder, ShiftTrained
If you've ever stood in the corner of your dining room at 4:45pm trying to get 14 people to pay attention while you go over three specials, you already know what doesn't work. Pre-shift meetings aren't training. They're announcements.
Why a Quiz Beats a Pre-Shift
Here's the problem with talking at a group: half your team is mid-conversation, one person is adjusting their apron, another is clocking in. Even if you had everyone's attention, a one-way lecture has a retention rate in the 20s. A quiz is a two-way street, people have to actually retrieve an answer, which is the one learning mechanic that holds up for weeks, not hours.
On top of that, a pre-shift can't scale. Got two restaurants? You have to run it twice. Got staff on multiple shifts? They miss it. Got a new hire? They catch the back half of one, then show up on Tuesday confused about a ravioli that wasn't mentioned. A quiz runs on their phone, anytime.
Mobile First, Because Your Staff Lives on Their Phone
Our quiz is designed around one use case: a server or bartender pulls out their phone between a seating and a check drop, scans a QR code, and answers five to fifteen questions in under four minutes. No app to install. No account to set up. They enter their name and email, take the quiz, done.
Big buttons. One question per screen. A visible timer if you want urgency, none if you want thoughtful. Big friendly green/red feedback so they know exactly which question they blew. The whole thing fits on an iPhone SE on restaurant wifi, because that's the worst-case device in most kitchens.
10-Minute Setup
Here's the whole workflow end to end:
- Upload your menu, PDF or a phone photo of the printed copy. Go make coffee.
- Come back in about 10 minutes. Our AI has parsed your menu, generated 100-400 questions, polished the weak ones, and fact-checked the strong ones.
- Scan through. Archive anything off. Approve the allergen-flagged ones. Done.
- Create a quiz in two clicks. Share the link via text or email.
- Staff takes it. Scores land on your dashboard in real time.
If you've ever set up a learning management system, you know this is absurdly fast. If you haven't, take our word for it: nobody else does this in ten minutes.
What You See on the Dashboard
Who took it, what they scored, how long they took, which category they bombed. Our dashboard's built for operators, not IT departments. Pair it with the menu knowledge quizbest practices and you'll see exactly where your team's weak, usually wine, usually allergens, always sides.
First-time operator? Start with our new hire onboarding guide. Running multiple restaurants? Our Max plan supports up to 3 locations with shared reporting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do staff need to download an app?
No. The quiz runs in any mobile browser, Safari, Chrome, whatever they have. They tap a link, enter their name and email, take the quiz. No App Store, no signup friction.
How long does a typical quiz take?
Two to four minutes for a 5-15 question quiz. The whole UX is built for a server standing in the POS area between tables, big buttons, one question per screen, auto-advance.
Can I see who took the quiz and how they scored?
Yes. The manager dashboard shows every attempt in real time, who took it, their score, how long they spent, which category they bombed. You can filter by employee, quiz, or date range.
Does it work on slow restaurant wifi?
Yes. The quiz UI is designed for the cheapest Android phone on a congested restaurant network. Questions load one at a time and submit is tiny. No videos, no heavy animations.
