Server Quiz App: 3-Minute Mobile Quizzes for Restaurant Floors
By Terry Psaltakis — Founder, ShiftTrained

A server quiz app is the most-used training surface in your operation — and most of them are designed wrong. They demand an App Store install. They lock features behind a desktop login. They render menus as wide tables that don't fit a 5.5-inch phone. ShiftTrained is the server quiz app built phone-first, not desktop-retrofitted. SMS delivers the quiz link. The browser opens to a clean 3-minute experience. Score posts to the leaderboard. Done in the time it takes to walk back to the side station.
The mobile-only workflow we engineered around
Server pulls phone from pocket. Sees text from manager: "3-min menu quiz, here's the link." Taps. Browser opens. Authenticates with phone number (no password). 8 questions. Submits. Sees their score, sees their leaderboard rank, sees which questions they missed. Closes phone. That's the entire flow. No install, no email confirmation, no "create your account first." The app is the link.
Why no App Store install
The minute you require an install, you lose 40% of your floor. Server has a low-storage phone. Won't install another "work app." Doesn't want to give an app permissions to their personal device. Won't download in low-signal back-of-house. ShiftTrained dodges all of that — we're a web app, not a native app. iOS, Android, anything: same experience. Compare to the friction on a general restaurant quiz app that demands a download.
The leaderboard is the engagement loop
Top scorer screenshots the leaderboard, sends it to the group chat. That's the loop. Once it starts, it doesn't need re-priming. Servers re-take quizzes voluntarily on their off-shift just to climb. We didn't engineer this — it's what staff do when you give them a fair, specific way to demonstrate they know the menu.
What the manager sees
Live scores roll into your manager dashboardas servers complete the quiz. Per-server, per-quiz, per-question. You see who's been clicking through fast (a sign of guessing) and who's pausing on the harder questions (a sign of actually thinking). The pattern data tells you who's coachable and who's phoning it in.
Try the app yourself before assigning
Best test: upload your menu, generate the first quiz, send the link to your own phone, take it. You'll know in 3 minutes whether the app fits the way your servers actually work. Pair it with the server quiz rundown for the longer pedagogy story. Start a free trial — no credit card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between this and a 'server quiz' page?
Same product, different framing. The server quiz page is about the pedagogy — why short, frequent quizzes work. The server quiz app page is about the mobile delivery experience — SMS link, no install, browser-based UI. Same engine, different angle of the same offering.
Does the app work offline?
The quiz needs a connection to load and submit. Once loaded, the questions render even on flaky signal — and the app retries the submission until it lands. We don't ship a fully offline mode because servers in service-industry environments typically have at least intermittent signal.
Can I white-label the quiz app for my brand?
Org logos and brand colors render on the quiz pages by default — your server sees your restaurant's brand, not ShiftTrained's. Full white-label (custom domain, no ShiftTrained mention) is available on Enterprise plans.
