Digitize the Server Test You Already Have
By Terry Psaltakis, Founder, ShiftTrained
Quick answer
To digitize a server test, upload the test you already have as a PDF or a phone photo, and ShiftTrained reads it and rebuilds it as an online quiz. Your questions come through word for word, including your wording and your answer choices. Staff take it on their own phones from a text or email link with no app to install, it grades itself, and you see every score. Nothing is rewritten for you and nothing is guessed at. Free to build and try, $29 a month to send it to staff.

Most restaurants already have the test. It is in a binder in the office, or a Word doc someone made in 2019, or a photocopy of a photocopy that a manager grades by hand at the end of a shift. It works. The problem was never the test, it is that paper does not scale, nobody can find last month's scores, and grading twenty of them by hand is an hour nobody has. You should not have to throw that away and start over just to get it on a phone.
Your questions stay your questions
Upload the test and every question comes across word for word. Your phrasing, your answer choices in your order, even your typos and your parenthetical hints. We do not shorten it, improve it, or rewrite it into our house style. If your test asks "What are the four steps of the Fat Tommy's greet?" then that is exactly what your server reads on their phone. That matters more than it sounds: a test written by the people who run the floor already encodes how your restaurant actually works, and no generic template gets that.
We never guess an answer
If your document marks the answer, with a key, a circled choice, bold text, or grading marks, we take it. If it does not, we do not invent one. Those questions are held and handed back to you to confirm, because a wrong answer on your own exam is worse than no answer at all. Allergy and safety questions get the strictest handling of anything in the system, since a wrong answer there is not an inconvenience, it is a hospital visit. See allergen training for how we treat that content everywhere else too.
Fill-in-the-blank becomes multiple choice, around your answer
Paper tests are full of short-answer and fill-in-the-blank questions, which are fine on paper and terrible on a phone. Where your test already supplies the answer, we keep your answer as the correct one and build the multiple-choice options around it, then flag those questions so you can look them over before anyone sees them. Your answer never changes. Only the format does.
No app for your staff to install
They get a link in a text or an email, they tap it, they take the test. It runs in whatever browser is already on the phone. No download, no account to create, no password to hand out at pre-shift, no app store, no company device. This is the single biggest reason staff training software goes unused, and it is why we built it this way from day one. See how the quiz app works.
It grades itself and keeps the record
Every attempt is scored the moment they finish. You see who passed, who did not, which questions the floor keeps missing, and how long people took. You set the pass mark. Retakes are allowed and only the best score counts, so the test becomes something staff can actually study toward instead of a one-shot trap. And the record sticks around, which is the part that matters the day an insurance carrier or an HR file asks whether that server was trained.
Or skip the paper and build it from your menu
If you do not have a test, or yours is out of date, upload your menu instead and our AI writes the first draft for you, covering ingredients, allergens, prep, pairings, and prices. Either way you end up in the same place, with a question bank you own. See restaurant menu training.
Every question stays yours to change
Whether the questions came from your binder or from your menu, they are yours from that point on. Edit the wording, fix an answer, delete the ones that do not fit your house, or write new ones from scratch. Then build whatever quizzes you want out of them: pick the exact questions, how many, the pass mark, and how long staff get per question. Most operators end up with several off the same material, a wine quiz for the bar, an allergen quiz for the floor, a short one for new hires.
Try it with the test you already have
Take a photo of the front page of your server test and upload it. Building it is free and there is no credit card, so you can see your own exam running on your own phone before you decide anything. Start a free trial.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file types can I upload?
A PDF, or a photo taken on your phone. A clear picture of each page of the printed test works fine, which is usually faster than finding the original file.
Will you change the wording of my questions?
No. Questions and answer choices are extracted word for word, in your order, including phrasing we would not have chosen ourselves. It is your exam. You can edit anything afterwards, but nothing is edited for you.
What if my test doesn't have the answers marked?
Those questions are held and handed back to you to fill in. We never guess an answer, and we never use outside knowledge to invent one, because a wrong answer on your own test is worse than no answer at all.
What happens to fill-in-the-blank questions?
Where your document supplies the answer, we keep it as the correct answer and build multiple-choice options around it, then flag those so you can review them before staff see them. Your answer is never altered.
Do my staff need to download an app?
No. They tap a link from a text or an email and it opens in the browser already on their phone. No download, no account, no password to hand out.
How long does it take?
Minutes. Upload the test, look over anything we flagged, and it is ready to send. Most operators do the whole thing between lunch and dinner.
What does it cost?
Building it and taking it yourself is free with no credit card. Sending it to staff starts at $29 a month, which covers up to 20 team members.
